The General Practitioner is being used as a steelhead fly. Although it is traditional east coast Salmon pattern that has gained a following here on the west coast. I know one fly angler who refers to it as the "General Proctologist" because it's a "pain in the butt to tie."
The GP has "presence" in the water, and is especially useful when flows are on the turbid side.
Variations: In addition to orange, the fly is often tied in black or purple.
