The now Famous Boss was popularized by Grant King of Guerenville California, who owned a Fly Shop that he managed with his wife Betty.
It is believed he named this pattern for her-The Boss. The style was adapted from the Comet, another popular Steelhead fly.
This is the first design that started the famous Comet Style of Steelhead Fly Patterns on the West Coast. Although the true designer is unknown, we do know that it was first created on the Russian River in 1949. Originally known as “Popeye Flies” due to the large bead chain eyes this style of Steelhead Pattern makes all the sense in the world. With a compact body, sparse dressing and bead chain eyes for weight these patterns ride low in the water column and are just perfect for deep water holding scenarios. |
