The pattern for this fly came from the fine book by Dick Stewart and Farrow Allen, Flies for Steelhead. They write that this fly is a John Olschewsky variation of the original Polar Shrimp. It is named, Polar Shrimp, "Glasso" in their book because John Olschewsky originally tied it in the style of Syd Glasso. He uses it throughout the winter.
